State Report

Introduction

Ever heard of a state that only has a population of 600,000 people? Well that fact belongs to the state of Vermont. It has the second smallest population in the U.S. Its capitol is Montpelier and it has three bordering states. These include New Hampshire, New York, and Connecticut. It also borders Canada. There are many more facts about Vermont, which are just as interesting as these.

History

The history of Vermont has a lot of amazing facts. The first people who came to this land, which is now Vermont, were the Abenaki Indians. They came in about A.D. 1300. Soon the Abenaki started fighting the Iroquois. After the Europeans came, the Abenaki got the French to side with them, and the Iroquois successfully got the British to join them. A war broke out which was named the French and Indian War. The Iroquois and the British won and Britain took Vermont and twelve other colonies. However, soon after the thirteen colonies waged a war against King George III for taxing them too much. This was called The Revolutionary War. The colonies won the war and in 1791 Vermont became the 14th state of the U.S. Much later they also outlawed slavery. Vermont has a rich history.

Cities

In Vermont there are few cities but many towns. There are nine cities and 242 towns. The state capitol is Montpelier, with a population of 8,035 people, and is famous for being the only capitol without a McDonalds. Another city is Vergennes, with a low population of 2,741. Vergennes also has a mere area of 6.5km squared, and .3 of that is water. The longest river in Vermont (Otter Creek) flows straight through this city. Burlington is another and largest city in Vermont. Burlington also has the highest population, which is 150,000 people. Next to Burlington there is a lake that is the 6th largest in the U.S. It is called lake Champlain. This next city is South Burlington. Its population is roughly 16,ooo people, and its biggest draw is excellent public schools. South Burlington’s total area is 76.7km squared and 44% of that is water. These cities and towns have a big history.

Parks

One park in Vermont is called the Green Mountain National Forest. It is a four-season recreation experience. In winter people usually go skiing and snowboarding. In summer they go camping, hiking, fishing etc. Big Deer State Park is located next to Groton State Park and people are allowed to hike and camp. In winter the temperature is 14-16oF and in summer 66-70oF. These parks are only two out of many.

Physical Feature

The physical features of Vermont are quite fascinating. One feature is that in winters Vermont reaches, on average, a temperature of 17oF and in summer Vermont has, on average, a temperature of 71oF. There are two mountain ranges in the whole state. The Green Mountains and the Taconic Mountains. Forests cover 77% of Vermont and the lowest point in Vermont is 95 feet above sea level. The longest river in Vermont is Otter Creek. Vermont’s physical features are definitely attractive.

Interesting Facts

Vermont just so happens to be the second smallest state in population but not in size. Vermont’s state animal is the Morgan Horse, state bird is the hermit Thrush, the state tree is the Sugar maple, and the state song is “Hail Vermont.” Also in 1977 a fourth grade class in Vermont got to choose the honeybee. Another fun fact is that the first globe made in the U.S. was made by a Vermonter. Even though it is a small state, there is a lot to learn.

Conclusion
